64 CEO of Charah Solutions About Scott Sewell Scott Sewell became CEO and president of Charah Solutions, Inc. in 2019, six months after playing an instrumental role in taking the Company public and eleven years after joining the Company and serving in various operational positions. Today Scott is at the helm of one of the nation’s leading providers of mission-critical environmental services and byproduct sales to the power generation industry as Charah Solutions assists utilities with a broad range of services to sustainably manage and recycle ash byproducts generated from the combustion of coal in the production of electricity as well as Environmental Risk Transfer (ERT) services for the decommissioning, remediation and redevelopment of coal power plants. The Company has operations in over 50 coal-fired generation sites across the country and routinely handles or beneficiates more than 20 tons of coal ash each year. As CEO, Scott is playing a leading role in an industry revolution for what is regarded as one of America’s best resource conservation and recovery examples – the beneficial use of coal ash. By developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the betterment of the planet, he is educating the industry and leading a mindset and operations paradigm shift which focuses on the beneficial use of ash and the remediation of coal fired power plants. Recycled coal ash is used in the production of concrete and the growing infrastructure construction demands utilize millions of tons of coal ash every year, thus preserving natural resources while dramatically reducing the need for landfill space. Recycled ash used in concrete decreases CO2 and other greenhouse gases that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere and it also benefits local communities by returning the land to its natural habitat or for commercial and community use. Scott is fearlessly leading this recycling revolution and facing the environmental challenges of coal head on and focusing on industry-leading sustainable solutions for the future. Scott is also committed to cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equality and inclusion. Recognizing that diversity and inclusion are keys to Charah Solutions’ success and in response to the Company’s inaugural Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report in March 2021, Scott set clear goals to significantly increase workforce diversity over the next three years and has put initiatives into place to ensure Charah Solutions meets or exceeds these goals including a Diverse Scholarship Program, a Diverse Apprenticeship Program, and increasing diverse supplier spend. The Charah Solutions Board of Directors also reflects this vision with two minority board members, including a minority female, aligning our Board of Directors diversity with our workforce diversity. Charah Solutions also has a strong commitment to our nation’s service men and women and believes in the leadership and values that experienced veterans bring to the team with goals established to continue to increase our strong military veteran workforce. Most recently, Scott led the charge of Environmental Risk Transfer (ERT) services offering where Charah Solutions acquires shuttered coal-fired power plants and assumes the related environmental liabilities. ERT services represent an innovative solution designed to meet the evolving and increasingly complex needs of utility partners who are now experiencing an increased need to retire and decommission older and less economically viable generating assets while maximizing the value and improving the environment. In July 2021, the Company announced its third ERT project at GenOn’s Avon Lake Generating Station in Ohio where it will begin environmental remediation and sustainable redevelopment of the property. These commitments to innovation and diversity and inclusion are the hallmarks of Scott’s transformative leadership and Charah Solutions’ resulting success.
