It is one of the largest private companies in the U.S.: - 49,000 employees - Annual sales in 2018 of $9.2 billion - 28th on the 2019 Supermarket News list of the Top 75 Supermarkets based on sales volume Wegmans is a family-owned company, founded in 1916, headquartered in Rochester, NY. Danny Wegman is chairman; Colleen Wegman, his daughter, is president and CEO. Danny’s daughter Nicole Wegman is sr. vice president. Robert Wegman, Danny’s father, was chairman until his death in April 2006. Our Founders Brothers Walter and John Wegman (Robert Wegman’s father and uncle) learned the food business by working in their parents’ store in Rochester. John peddled fresh produce from a pushcart, and in 1916, he opened the Rochester Fruit & Vegetable Company, which marks the beginning of Wegmans Food Markets. Walter joined him a year later. ABOUT COLLEEN WEGMAN Colleen Wegman joined the company in 1991, where she worked her way up the ranks in a variety of roles that included Irondequoit store manager, director of e-commerce, vice president and then being named president by the late Robert B. Wegman, her grandfather, in 2005. In a 2016 interview with the Democrat and Chronicle, Colleen Wegman said that she started visiting stores with her father and sister at age 5. Colleen Wegman graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in sociology and later earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Rochester. She also has served as chairman of United Way of Greater Rochester’s board of directors and was chairman of its 2010 annual campaign.
