CEO Today USA Awards
CONNECTICUT www.ceotodaymagazine.com 40 CEO Today USAAwards 2017 This summer, the Cigna Foundation also gave a $300,000 grant to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) to help expand its Rapid Response Referral Program, a community effort to help veterans meet their life goals through connections to education, medical and legal resources and benefits. What is Cigna doing to help impact community health? Cigna believes that the community needs to play an essential role in improving health, which takes different shapes around theglobe. We’ve seen that today’s health care system, regardless of its structure, can’t meet the needs of every individual on its own. It is fundamentally important for us to create opportunities to engage and inform people who we might otherwise not reach by more traditional means, and we do that through our Go. Know. Take Control. Health Improvement Tour, founded through a partnership with the Cordani Family Foundation. This is a multi-city tour, bringing a mobile unit offering free health screenings to communities nationwide. During visits, people can learn more about four health numbers: blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and Body Mass Index (BMI), which are the key health numbers to help identify risks for major chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Health coaches are available onsite to help people understand their numbers and explain how to take follow-up steps. Through mid-November 2017, our cross-country initiative has delivered free biometric screenings to nearly 10,000 people in more than 90 cities. 3 What is your approach to leadership? I view myself as someone who sets goals, secures and supports the right talent, and supports my team to be successful. The best leadership advice I ever received was to live by the Golden Rule, that I should treat people as I expect and want to be treated. What was your personal career path? I came to Cigna early in my career for its business diversity and because it was a highly ethical company. My path over the past 26+ years has had many twists and turns. I’m a big believer in stretch goals, and I hoped one day to lead Cigna’s health care business. Having a stretch goal like that mademe uncomfortable, in a good way. If you’re too comfortable, you won’t drive the level of change that’s needed to be successful. When you’re in the right job, you bring equal amounts of excitement and fear to the role. How do your passion for health and your personal health regimen shape your workplace leadership? My healthy lifestyle is not only important to me personally, but essential for the demands of leading a company of tens of thousands of employees around the world. I’ve competed in more than 125 triathlons, but these days, I tend to focus more on participating in events sponsored by charitable organizations, particularly those that Cigna supports, such as guiding veterans with disabilities in races sponsored by Achilles International™. My commitment to fitness has improved my ability to focus, to compete, and to work better as part of a team. It has also taught me the importance of tenacity and overcoming obstacles and challenges. All of those things have made me a better leader. Healthy living is part of our employee culture at Cigna. I take tremendous pride in the fact that 94 percent of our employees and families are tobacco-free, and nearly 70 percent report they’re at a healthy weight. 4 How do you know when you’ve been a successful leader? On a personal level, every day when I wake up, I ask myself if one of my loved ones were in need, would I want them to be with any other company? My answer is no, and that’s how I know I’m doing my job as a leader. 1 Source: 2015 Cigna Collaborative Care performance report, published January 2017. https://www.cigna.com/assets/docs/newsroom/collaborative-care- proofpoints-2015.pdf?WT.z_nav=newsroom%2Fknowledge-center%2Faco%3BBody%3Bpdf 2 Source: Company records (signed pledges received from medical groups, 2017) 3 Source: Cigna Health Improvement Tour internal report, through week of Nov. 13, 2017 4 Source: Cigna Human Resource internal workforce reports, 2015 All Cigna products and services are provided exclusively by or through operating subsidiaries of Cigna Corporation, including Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company, Connecticut General Life Insurance Company, Cigna Behavioral Health, Inc., or their affiliates.
