James, when you first started your business in 2015 where did you find the motivation to begin and to work on growing the business to what it has become today, how has the business grown in ways you didn’t expect?

The genesis of my entrepreneurial journey was a humble yet pivotal moment that continues to resonate with me. I remember vividly the day when my financial constraints prevented me from purchasing a meal from Chipotle for my daughters. This incident was the catalyst that illuminated my path; suddenly, I was acutely aware of my ambitions, understanding not only what I wanted to achieve but also how to accomplish it. I had an innate conviction that establishing my own business was my true calling, yet I was searching for that initial spark of inspiration to propel me forward.

This moment furnished that much-needed ignition. What followed has been an extraordinary venture. Admittedly, I did not anticipate the rapid escalation of my endeavor, surpassing the $50 million revenue mark, which was an astounding milestone. This unexpected success has only fueled my curiosity and ambition as I now aspire towards the next financial echelon of $100 million and even consider the possibility of taking the company public. These aspirations are testament to the boundless potential that can stem from a single moment of challenge turned into a life-changing opportunity.

You have had a wide range of experience, from the Armed Forces to various security work and now being the CEO of your own successful business, where do you find your leadership approach comes from and why did you decide to follow this path to consultancy?

My experience in the military and my leadership roles within the church have greatly influenced my leadership style. Through my time in the military, I learned valuable skills such as organization, planning, and effective execution. These skills have been crucial in shaping my leadership approach. Additionally, my involvement in the church has taught me the importance of valuing individuals for their unique abilities and how to inspire and motivate them through my own passion and enthusiasm. How do you balance the demands of being a CEO with your personal life and well-being?

I followed the path of consultancy because it is what I knew. I always say, start with what’s in your hands. If it’s a shovel, start digging, and eventually you’ll get where you’re trying to go.

Can you tell us why government organizations come to you for consultancy services and what problems are they typically facing when they come to you?

Our esteemed government clients comprise high-level officials who bear the responsibility of addressing diverse organizational challenges. Frequently, they may encounter limitations in knowledge and resources that hinder their capacity to resolve these issues effectively. Our role is to collaborate with these officials and assist them in identifying the nature of the problem, devising a strategic solution, executing the plan, and overseeing its efficacy through continuous monitoring. This relationship transcends a mere transactional interaction; it is a strategic partnership founded on a mutual commitment to generate successful outcomes.

Why is it important that you offer IT and networking management support and how does this programme help a business’s success?

IT and networking management support are not only indispensable but also serve as a propellant for businesses striving to secure their position and flourish in a heavily digitized business environment. The scope of these services is incredibly broad and, without them, a company’s capability to operate effectively, drive innovation, and maintain its competitive advantage would be significantly hampered.

You offer multiple services at a high standard for your clients, how do you ensure that each area is tailored to the client as the business prioritises the trust between you and the client?

To excel in client services and build trust, I adopt a client-focused and trustworthy approach through these key strategies: deeply understanding client needs by engaging in direct communication and industry research; crafting customized solutions that specifically address their unique challenges; maintaining open lines of client communication to promote transparency and commitment; continuously refining services based on client feedback and market evolution; investing in employee training for expert service delivery; ensuring data security to protect client information and fortify trust; and rigorously adhering to compliance and industry standards to ensure professional, legal services. These steps are crucial for creating personalized experiences that resonate with clients and establish a sustainable, trusting business relationship.

How do you balance your family life with such an important role and a thriving business, is there a skill or technique you have learned in order to prioritise both?

To achieve an equilibrium between my professional responsibilities and personal life, I employ a structured approach by dedicating specific days solely to personal pursuits. In coordination with my Executive Assistant, I have established a firm schedule where Mondays and Fridays are reserved for personal matters. This deliberate scheduling is a non-negotiable aspect of my weekly routine, ensuring that I can maintain a healthy work-life balance while remaining committed to both my career and my well-being. This methodical separation of time helps in fostering focus and productivity during workdays, and allows for undisturbed quality time for personal activities and rejuvenation during my days off.

Within your business you have a team of skilled professionals including veterans, government workers and more, why is it important to you to include people from different experiences and work backgrounds, does this resemble your personal values?

Incorporating individuals from diverse experiences and work backgrounds into a company is of paramount importance for several compelling reasons. A professional environment enriched with a variety of perspectives fosters a culture of innovation and creativity. Individuals with different skill sets and experiences bring unique insights to problem-solving processes, leading to more comprehensive and well-rounded solutions. This diversity within the workforce also reflects the multifaceted nature of our global market, enabling the company to better understand and serve a broader customer base. Furthermore, it promotes an inclusive workplace where talent is recognized and valued regardless of background, enhancing employee morale and contributing to a more collaborative and dynamic work environment. By embracing diversity, a company positions itself as a forward-thinking and socially responsible player in the industry, which not only attracts a wider talent pool but also strengthens its reputation amongst stakeholders and the community at large.

What recent success has Trust Consultancy services had, and how was this achieved?

Trust just won a 80 million dollar digital transformation contract with the defense logistics agency, DoD’s largest logistics combat support agency, providing worldwide logistics support in both peacetime and wartime to the military services as well as several civilian agencies and foreign countries.

As someone who has created their own success and a thriving business, is there a piece of advice you would offer to others which you believed would have helped you when you were starting out?

Aspiring entrepreneurs should prioritize adaptability and lifelong learning, as these qualities enable one to navigate the ever-shifting business landscape with agility and informed decision-making. Furthermore, it is essential to cultivate a resilient mindset and actively seek feedback, allowing one to persevere through challenges and refine their venture to meet market demands and customer needs.
